Maria Montessori did not anticipate creating a revolution in education. In fact, the education of children was not on her mind at all!

She was born in Italy in 1870 and grew up in Rome. As a young child she had an insatiable appetite to know the world, and all areas of life fascinated her. At the time, it was unheard of that females would go beyond elementary school level, bur Maria Montessori insisted on finishing Secondary school and then went on to University to enter the field of medicine. She did not let the fact that there had never been a female physician in Italy before put her off.

Montessori education is an educational approach established on the fundamental model of basic human development and is based on the principle that a child learns best when the social environment supports his or her unique development, such that he can become an independent individual.Dr. Montessori advocated that to educating a child is to prepare the child for the future.

Classrooms are bright and exciting environments suitable for learning. Montessori classrooms are beautiful by design. They are set up in an open style, with work areas throughout the room and materials available on accessible shelving. Most lessons are given to individual children or small groups while other children are working independently. Learning is not based on rote drill and memorization. Montessori schools promote respect for children as unique individuals. The child's social and emotional development along with academic development is of great concern. Montessori schools are supportive schools where children don't get lost in the crowd.
